THE MEETING AT JUSTICE broke up late in the morning, with Kleindienst promising to call the dozen men back later in the day to nail down their counterattack. At noon, church bells began tolling all over the country. They rang for an hour. It was an act endorsed by almost every major religious domination in the country—twenty-seven of them, basically everybody but the historically conservative Southern Baptists—in a “call to repentance and renewal” over the war in Vietnam.

“Our nation is sorely troubled,” their statement read. “We believe this to be a sickness of the spirit. A major cause is the continuing war in Southeast Asia. Although substantial numbers of combat forces have been withdrawn, the war has been widened geographically and additional thousands of combatants and non-combatants are being killed . . . We are all sick at heart.” The bells rang in “mourning for those who have already died in Southeast Asia and our sorrow that the killing continues.”
